Family Inbox
The Family Inbox lets you forward emails — school newsletters, activity sign-ups, appointment reminders — to Thriva. Our AI reads each email, figures out which child it’s about, and pulls out tasks and events so nothing falls through the cracks.
Getting Started
Section titled “Getting Started”Every Thriva family has a unique email address. You’ll find it at the top of the Inbox page in the Parent Portal.
Your Family Email Address
Section titled “Your Family Email Address”Your address looks like this:
family-abc123@mg.thriva.appCopy it from the Inbox page and set up forwarding from your regular email, or forward individual emails as needed.
How Emails Are Processed
Section titled “How Emails Are Processed”When an email arrives in your Family Inbox:
- AI Classification — Thriva’s AI reads the email and categorizes it (school, personal, event, promotional, etc.)
- Child Assignment — The AI identifies which child the email is about based on names and context
- Task Extraction — Action items (“bring PE kit on Thursday”, “permission slip due Friday”) become tasks
- Event Detection — Dates and times (“Sports Day on June 12th at 2pm”) become calendar events
- Confidence Check — If the AI isn’t sure about something, the email is flagged for your review
Classification Types
Section titled “Classification Types”| Classification | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| School | School communications | Newsletters, teacher emails, school announcements |
| Personal | Direct personal emails | Messages from other parents, family |
| Event | Event-focused emails | Party invitations, activity sign-ups |
| Promotional | Marketing emails | Product offers, subscription newsletters |
| Other | Anything else | Miscellaneous forwarded emails |
Reviewing Emails
Section titled “Reviewing Emails”Filters
Section titled “Filters”Use the filter bar at the top of your Inbox to quickly find what matters:
- All — Every email in your inbox
- Unread — Emails you haven’t opened yet
- Needs Review — Emails where the AI flagged something for your attention
Providing Feedback
Section titled “Providing Feedback”When you open an email, you can give feedback on how the AI handled it:
- Correct — The AI got the classification and child assignment right
- Wrong child — The email was assigned to the wrong child (select the correct one)
- Wrong classification — The category was incorrect
- Not relevant — This email shouldn’t have been processed
Your feedback directly improves Thriva’s accuracy. Over time, the AI learns your family’s email patterns and gets better at sorting automatically.
Email Routing Rules
Section titled “Email Routing Rules”Routing rules tell Thriva how to handle emails from specific senders or with certain subjects — before the AI even looks at them.
How Rules Are Created
Section titled “How Rules Are Created”Rules are created in two ways:
- Automatically — When you provide feedback on emails, Thriva creates rules based on your corrections
- From the feedback modal — When giving feedback, you can explicitly create a rule for that sender
Managing Rules
Section titled “Managing Rules”Open the Email Rules section (just below the filter bar on the Inbox page) to see all your active rules.
Each rule shows:
- Type — Domain, Sender, Subject, or School
- Pattern — What the rule matches (e.g.,
newsletter@school.edu) - Child — Which child the emails are assigned to
- Classification — How matched emails are categorized
Rule Types
Section titled “Rule Types”| Type | Matches | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | All emails from a domain | school.edu matches any @school.edu sender |
| Sender | Specific email address | newsletter@school.edu |
| Subject | Subject line contains text | Emails with “Year 3” in the subject |
| School | School-specific pattern | Emails identified as coming from a known school |
Deleting Rules
Section titled “Deleting Rules”If a rule is no longer needed:
- Open the Email Rules section on the Inbox page
- Hover over the rule you want to remove
- Click the delete icon
- Confirm the deletion
Tasks and Events
Section titled “Tasks and Events”When the AI finds action items or dates in your emails, they’re automatically created as tasks and events for the relevant child.
Extracted Tasks
Section titled “Extracted Tasks”Tasks appear in your child’s task list with:
- The task title (extracted from the email)
- The due date (if mentioned)
- A link back to the source email
Extracted Events
Section titled “Extracted Events”Events appear on the family calendar with:
- The event title
- Date and time (or “all day” if no time specified)
- The child it’s associated with
Tips for Best Results
Section titled “Tips for Best Results”- Forward complete emails — Don’t edit or trim emails before forwarding. The AI works best with the full content.
- Use consistent forwarding — Set up auto-forwarding rules in your email so school communications flow in reliably.
- Provide feedback early — The more feedback you give in the first week or two, the faster Thriva learns your family’s patterns.
- Check the Needs Review filter — Make it a habit to check flagged emails periodically so nothing important gets missed.
