Website Rules

Website rules determine which websites are accessible during each mode. Unlike apps, websites require a different approach since new sites appear constantly.

ThrivaOS browser only loads approved websites. Unapproved sites show a friendly “not available” message.

Broader web access with family-appropriate filters. Some content is still blocked based on your settings.

  1. Open the Parent Portal
  2. Go to child’s profile
  3. Click Apps & Websites
  4. Select Website Rules
TypeDescription
Allow AlwaysAvailable in all modes
Allow Free TimeOnly during Free Time
Block AlwaysNever accessible
  1. Click + Add Rule
  2. Enter the website URL (e.g., khanacademy.org)
  3. Choose rule type (Always, Free Time, etc.)
  4. Save the rule

Use wildcards for broad access:

  • *.google.com - All Google sites
  • *.edu - Educational institutions
  • *.gov - Government sites

Same process, but choose “Block Always”:

  • Specific inappropriate sites
  • Categories of content
  • Distracting sites (even in Free Time)

Thriva includes curated lists you can enable:

Pre-approved educational sites:

  • Khan Academy
  • PBS Kids
  • National Geographic Kids
  • Common learning platforms

Forces safe search on major search engines:

  • Google SafeSearch
  • Bing SafeSearch
  • DuckDuckGo Safe Mode

Block major social platforms:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • TikTok
  • Twitter/X
  • Snapchat

Block known inappropriate content categories.

Automatically allowed when connected:

  • classroom.google.com
  • Related Google education tools

Add your school’s platforms:

  • Canvas
  • Seesaw
  • Schoology
  • Blackboard

Allow all sites from your school:

  • *.yourschool.edu
  • *.schooldistrict.org

When children encounter blocked sites:

  1. Blocked page shows “Request Access”
  2. Child explains why they need the site
  3. Request appears in Parent Portal
  4. Parent reviews and decides

Check each request by:

  • Visiting the site yourself
  • Understanding the purpose
  • Deciding if it fits your values

One click to add to allowed list with chosen rule.

Optionally explain why (helps children understand).

Instead of individual sites, block entire categories:

  • Adult content
  • Violence
  • Gambling
  • Malware/Phishing
  • Social networking
  • Gaming
  • Streaming video
  • And more…
  1. Go to Website RulesCategories
  2. Toggle categories on/off
  3. Set per-mode rules if needed
  • Allow: Educational sites, school resources
  • Block: Social media, mature content, video streaming
  • Free Time: Gaming sites allowed
  • Allow: More research sites, broader educational content
  • Block: Mature content, some social media
  • Free Time: YouTube (with restrictions), gaming
  • Allow: Most educational and research sites
  • Block: Clearly inappropriate content
  • Free Time: Social media (with time limits if desired)

See which sites are visited:

  • By time of day
  • By frequency
  • By duration

Review what sites were blocked:

  • Helps identify legitimate needs
  • Spots potential concerns
  • Informs rule adjustments

Too many blocks create frustration and workarounds. Start reasonably and adjust.

Children should know what’s blocked and why.

Sites change, children grow, needs evolve.

Usage reports help you confirm rules are working.
