Reviewing Your Child's AI Chats
Reviewing Your Child’s AI Chats
Section titled “Reviewing Your Child’s AI Chats”Your children can chat with Thriva’s AI assistant to ask questions, get help with tasks, and navigate their digital experience. As a parent, you can review these conversations - but how much you see depends on the privacy level you choose.
Why Review Chats?
Section titled “Why Review Chats?”The goal isn’t surveillance - it’s connection:
- Start conversations - Use chat topics as natural entry points for discussions
- Understand needs - See what questions your child is asking
- Spot concerns - Get notified when the AI flags something that may need your attention
- Build trust - Show your child that you’re engaged, not spying
Visibility Modes
Section titled “Visibility Modes”You choose how much of each child’s AI conversations you can see. This setting affects what gets stored, not just what you can view - we take your child’s privacy seriously.
Flags Only (Maximum Privacy)
Section titled “Flags Only (Maximum Privacy)”What you see: Only conversations where the AI flagged something concerning.
What gets stored: Flagged messages only. Regular conversations are discarded after safety checks.
Best for: Older teens who’ve demonstrated responsible AI use and earned more independence.
Your child sees: “Your parent will only see chats if something concerns me”
Flags + Summary (Balanced)
Section titled “Flags + Summary (Balanced)”What you see: AI-generated topic summaries plus any flagged messages.
What gets stored: Topic summaries (like “Helped with math homework” or “Discussed feeling stressed about school”) and flagged content. Full transcripts are discarded.
Best for: Pre-teens and younger teens. You stay aware of general topics without reading every word.
Your child sees: “Your parent can see chat topics and anything that concerns me”
Full Transcript (Complete Visibility)
Section titled “Full Transcript (Complete Visibility)”What you see: Complete conversation history with all messages.
What gets stored: Everything.
Best for: Younger children or situations requiring closer monitoring.
Your child sees: “Your parent can review these conversations”
Important: Changing Modes
Section titled “Important: Changing Modes”When you change a child’s visibility mode, it only affects future conversations. Here’s why this matters:
If your child was using “Flags Only” mode and you switch to “Full Transcript”:
- Old conversations still show only flagged content (transcripts were never stored)
- New conversations going forward will have full transcripts
This ensures we keep the privacy promise made to your child. If they saw “Your parent will only see chats if something concerns me,” that remains true for those conversations - even if you later change the setting.
Where to Review Chats
Section titled “Where to Review Chats”From the Child’s Profile
Section titled “From the Child’s Profile”- Go to Children in the Parent Portal
- Select your child
- Click AI Chats in the Activity section
Here you can:
- Change the visibility mode
- Browse conversations
- Expand to see message details
- See which conversations are flagged
From AI Assistant
Section titled “From AI Assistant”- Go to AI Assistant in the Parent Portal
- Click the Kids’ Chats tab
This shows conversations across all your children, making it easy to review recent activity.
Understanding Flagged Content
Section titled “Understanding Flagged Content”The AI flags messages that may indicate:
- Self-harm concerns - References to hurting themselves
- Abuse mentions - Hints that someone may be hurting them
- Bullying - Discussions about being bullied or bullying others
- Substance mentions - References to drugs, alcohol, or vaping
- Bypass attempts - Trying to get the AI to override rules
What to Do When You See Flags
Section titled “What to Do When You See Flags”Don’t panic. Flags aren’t always emergencies. A child asking “what is vaping?” might just be curious after seeing it at school.
Approach with curiosity, not accusation:
- “I noticed you asked the AI about [topic]. What made you curious about that?”
- “The AI mentioned you seemed stressed about school. Want to talk about it?”
Use it as a conversation starter: The flag gives you an opening to discuss something that’s on your child’s mind - that’s valuable!
Trust your judgment: You know your child. A flag gives you information; you decide what to do with it.
Best Practices
Section titled “Best Practices”Be Transparent
Section titled “Be Transparent”Tell your children what visibility mode you’re using. No surprises.
With younger children: “I can see your chats with the AI so I can help if you need me.”
With teens: “I’m using the summary mode so I know general topics, but I’m not reading every word. As you show responsibility, you can earn flags-only mode.”
Create a Path to Privacy
Section titled “Create a Path to Privacy”As children demonstrate responsible AI use:
- Start with Full Transcript for younger children
- Move to Flags + Summary as trust builds
- Consider Flags Only for mature teens
This creates a natural progression toward independence.
Have Regular Check-ins
Section titled “Have Regular Check-ins”Rather than constantly monitoring:
- Review chats weekly, not obsessively
- Look for patterns, not individual messages
- Use what you see to guide conversations, not confrontations
Respect the Privacy Indicator
Section titled “Respect the Privacy Indicator”Your child sees a message explaining what you can see. This transparency is intentional:
- It builds trust
- It helps them understand appropriate self-disclosure
- It respects their dignity while maintaining safety
For Families to Discuss
Section titled “For Families to Discuss”Summary
Section titled “Summary”| Mode | You See | Stored | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flags Only | Flagged conversations only | Only flags | Responsible teens |
| Flags + Summary | Topic summaries + flags | Summaries + flags | Pre-teens, younger teens |
| Full Transcript | Everything | Everything | Younger children |
Remember: The goal is supporting your child’s development, not surveillance. Use this feature to connect and guide, not to catch and punish.
